$610,000 PRIZE TURNED OUT TO BE $67: MISTAKEN LOTTO 'WINNER' LIVED RICH WHILE IT LASTED - RICH: IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED

Call it a demonstration of the perverse power of money.
Bill Helko, a maintenance mechanic from Arcadia, bought five chances at the big $15.5-million Lotto prize last weekend. Late Saturday night, he called the Lotto information number. The recording seemed to be telling him that one of his tickets, on which Helko picked four of the six winning numbers, was worth $610,000.

Actually, Helko realized later, that's not what the recording said at all. The $610,000 was the prize pool for \o7 all\f7 of the winners in the 4-of-6 category. There were, it turned out, 9,096 other winners to share the amount.
"In the heat of the situation, no one paid attention to the word 'pool,' " said Helko, sitting in his living room later last week, chastened and amused at himself.
A tall man with a bushy mustache, the good-natured Helko, 38, wore a T-shirt with the word "MINE" in block letters repeated down his chest in diminishing sizes, like a fading echo.
Lesson in Human Nature
What happened in the five days after Helko and his family leapt to the conclusion that they were half-millionaires amounted to a bittersweet lesson in human nature, Helko says now. "People change when a substantial amount of money comes into their presence," he has concluded.
Late as it was that Saturday, Helko and his wife, Glenda, decided to share the good news with friends and relatives. They called their parents, some relatives back in Michigan, co-workers and Helko's boss at Xerox Medical Systems in Pasadena.
"I had the audacity to call him up at a quarter to midnight Saturday night and tell him I wouldn't be in on Monday because I just won $600,000," said Helko.
Planned Dream Home
There followed a sleepless night. Helko paced the floor, planning a dream home--"a monster bedroom, a bathroom with a Jacuzzi, an indoor-outdoor swimming pool"--and a bar-restaurant called "Loco Bill's." His 12-year-old son, Jim, was going to get a gold-plated skateboard, and his 9-year-old daughter, Rachel, a roomful of Cabbage Patch dolls. Both would go to college. And there would be a new car for Glenda.
At noon on Sunday, the Helkos marched down to the convenience store where they had bought their Lotto ticket. Glenda saw the 4-of-6 prize posted on a board: a measly $67 per winner. But Bill walked to the window and plunked his winning ticket down before he realized his mistake.
The Helkos had been rich for a total of 14 hours.
"Well, that's not bad for a $5 investment," shrugged Glenda, the practical member of the family. Bill laughed.
However, word about Helko's "good luck" had already spread to long-lost relatives around the country. And when he returned to his job at the research facility last Tuesday, Helko discovered that he had a new, magical status among his co-workers.
"My name was no longer Bill, it was 'Lucky,' " he said. "Ladies would come up to me and wanted to rub my hands."
Helko didn't have the heart to reveal the truth. "It (the saga of Lucky Helko) just grew and grew and grew," he said.
The mythical prize seemed to sit there invitingly, like the pot of money on a television quiz show. It looked so good that some of his friends could almost taste it.
'I noticed a new pattern," Helko said. "People started to change their outlook."
There was, in some cases, a subtle progression from congratulatory back- slapping to hungry circling.
"One friend wanted me to buy him a washer-dryer set," Helko said. "Another suddenly had this dire need for $20,000. It was 'God, Bill, I'm glad to hear it.' And then, 'Hey, I need $20,000. Right now.' " By mid-week, total strangers were calling him with sob stories, and neighbors were
trying to sell him things.
Co-workers thrust into Helko's hands the business cards of relatives who were investment counselors. One acquaintance even offered a drug deal. "He said he could take $100,000 and build it into $1 million in 30 days," Helko said.
Some people seemed angry. "There were people who used to talk to me in the hall, saying, 'How you doin', Bill?"' Helko said. "All of a sudden they wouldn't even talk to me. They were really mad."
Others Genuinely Happy
But others seemed genuinely happy at Helko's good fortune. A senior vice president at the company counseled him about taxes. His boss, Charles Fantom, national facilities manager for Xerox Medical System, congratulated him. "He told me there wasn't a person more deserving of it than me," Helko said.
"There were really all kinds of reactions," he said.
By Wednesday morning, a harsher reality caught up with Helko. On his way to work, the family car, a 1964 Thunderbird, threw a rod. It was beyond repair. The $67 had been spent on groceries, and the Helkos will probably have a bill at least that big for all the long- distance phone calls they made.
Posted Apology
On Thursday, Helko posted an apology on the company bulletin board, saying the story of his good luck had been "blown out of proportion." By then, co-workers had begun to suspect that the story was not true.
"I had read that there were two second-place winners who won over $600,000, and both of them were from the San Fernando Valley," said Fantom, Helko's boss.
Helko, rubbing his sore feet after the six-mile trek home from Pasadena when his car broke down, was philosophical. "We couldn't have had this much fun if we took the $67 and went to Disneyland," he said.
And there is, after all, this week's Lotto drawing to look forward to. Helko already has his $5 worth of tickets.

BULL IN SLAUGHTERHOUSE BEGS FOR ITS LIFE

Animals have feelings too. This is what this next story is telling us — if proven real.

A bull in Hong Kong was reported to cry and somewhat beg for his life.
Workers in a slaughterhouse were surprised when the bull suddenly knelt and cried before it was ushered into the slaughterhouse.
Shiu, one of the workers, said that he trembled when he saw the bull’s teary eyes.

They continued trying to pull the bull inside, but failed. The crying bull just would not budge!
The workers were moved and decided to gather funds to purchase the bull and give it to monks, who would take care of it.
According to the slaughterhouse workers, when they decided not to kill the bull, the creature stood up and followed them.
Hmm! What do you guys think?

101-YEAR-OLD GRANDMOTHER ‘COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD’

Mourners at a house in China were left shocked after a 101-year-old woman they thought was dead sat up just before she was due to be put into a coffin and spoke to them.

Peng Xiuhua surprised her friends and family when she awoke in Lianjiang, Guangdong province, and asked why her house was so crowded.
She had been declared dead after her two daughters found her lifeless body following a fall in her residence.
The two women in their 70s had bathed their mother and an undertaker had dressed her in preparation for her funeral.
But the memorial was not to take place after the grandmother sat up, just as she was being lowered into a casket.
Peng said: ‘I am a lucky woman.
‘Not only did I get to see how many people care for me, but I also woke up before they took me to the crematorium.’
Lucky indeed.

GARY THE GOAT WALKS FREE FROM COURT AFTER BEATING FLOWER-EATING RAP

A flower-eating goat named Gary has been cleared of vandalism after an Australian judge dismissed the case at a court in Sydney.
His owner Jim Dezarnaulds had been ordered to pay a 440 Australian dollar (£290) fine after Gary was spotted snacking on a flower bed outside the city’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
The case was dismissed however, after a judge ruled that neither Gary nor his owner could be held accountable for the crime.

Magistrate Carolyn Barkell said there was no evidence that Gary, who had his own lawyer, had been brought there to intentionally eat the flowers.
‘This is actually an abuse of the laws of nature, I mean it was a goat eating grass,’ Mr Dezarnaulds said after the verdict was announced.
‘I’m a comedian, I can come up with jokes, but it’s pretty hard to compete with cops coming up with this stuff.
‘It’s obviously a joke, but the fact that we’re here it’s gone a bit beyond a joke.’
Gary, who was not required to give evidence, did not comment on the verdict upon leaving court.
Mr Dezarnaulds added: ‘Gary taught the cops a valuable lesson and that’s don’t bite off more than you can chew.’
Gary became an internet star after news of his plight went viral, with his official Facebook page racking up over 10,000 likes.

MORE THAN 15,000 CROCODILES ESCAPE FROM SOUTH AFRICA REPTILE FARM

More than 15,000 crocodiles have escaped from a reptile farm in South Africa amid heavy flooding.

The runaway crocs are on the loose in and around one of the African country’s biggest rivers following a prolonged period of extreme wet weather conditions.
Rakwena Crocodile Farm was forced to open its gates over fears rushing flood water would crush the crocodiles.
‘There used to be only a few crocodiles in the Limpopo River. Now there are a lot,’ explained Zane Langman, a son-in-law of the farm’s owner.
‘I heard there were crocodiles in Musina [about 120km away] on the school’s rugby field.
‘When we reached them, the crocodiles were swimming around them. Praise the Lord, they were all alive.’
More than half of the reptiles have been recaptured following the floods which have led to the evacuation of thousands of residents in Mozambique and South Africa .

2,452 PARTY FOULS EARNS MAN SPOT IN THE GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS

Scottsdale, AZ — In one evening last November a Scottsdale man committed so many party fouls that it earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. The party where this feat occurred was at the Lancaster mansion party in Scottsdale, Arizona. It is a party which is thrown yearly for the elite of the elite in the area, and every year 34-year-old Paul Horner is invited for some reason.
“I don’t know why we keep inviting Mr. Horner back to our parties every year. We realize we’re just asking for trouble, but the guests seem to love him and he keeps them extremely entertained,” said 54-year-old Winston Lancaster III, who is the owner of the mansion where this exclusive party is held every year.
Paul Horner seen here committed enough party fouls last November to earn him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Elizabeth Lancaster told reporters that guests are forewarned of Horner’s attendance at the party. “Every year we warn people that Horner will be attending and of his previous actions,” Lancaster said. “What can I say, he’s a big hit. People love his antics. Some people just follow him around all night to see what crazy shenanigans he’ll do next.”

QUAD'S MY NUMBER? MUM SHAVES IDENTICAL SONS’ HAIR SO TEACHERS CAN TELL THEM APART

The mother of the identical quadruplet boys shaved numbers into their hair to help teachers and classmates tell them apart

THESE cute quads have been given a head start on their classmates.
The mother of the identical quadruplet boys shaved numbers into their hair to help teachers and classmates tell them apart.
Mum Tan Chaoyun, of Shenzen in China’s Guangdong Province, shaved the six-year-olds’ heads with the numbers one to four.
She took the drastic step before they started elementary school because she was worried the boys would get mixed up.
“My sons are identical, even to me,” said Tan who reckons the only difference between them is the shape of their eyelids.
“I could only tell the difference between them by having different ankle tags on them before they turned 18 months old.
“Even now, their father can’t tell which one is which.
"Sometimes he punishes the second one for something the third one has done.”

NEW FDA APPROVED DRUG ALLOWS YOU TO TASTE, SMELL AND HEAR COLORS

Santa Barbara, CA — Ttokkyo Laboratories is proud to announce FDA approval of their new wonder drug DeemtyTM. DeemtyTM was created for individuals that feel boredom or lack of excitement in their lives. The drug allows users to taste, smell and hear colors keeping life always fresh and interesting.

New FDA approved drug called Deemty
Paul Horner, CEO and Managing Director of Ttokkyo Laboratories, says the drug will change the way society lives. “No longer will people have boredom in their lives. That person working 40 hours a week behind a computer screen in a tiny cubicle will now enjoy coming to work. People without many friends, will now have colors to keep them entertained. It’s a wonderful thing.”
“DeemtyTM is amazing,” said 45-year-old Aaron Johnson. “I used to get so bored at work, every day was the same old routine, but not anymore. Now I spend all day having long conversations with different colors. The colors have so many interesting things to say plus they are great listeners. I talk to them while I’m driving, at home, or doing any mundane task, I just love it.” Johnson continued, “It has made my job as an elementary school bus driver a lot more fun that’s for sure.”
Chelsea Ellison from Payson, Arizona said she was bored with her life until she started using DeemtyTM. “I was bored of my job, where I live, my art, the same people I see at all the same places, bored of everything including myself. But all that changed with DeemtyTM,” says Ellison. “Now everything is like I’m in a movie, it’s so exciting. Colors like yellow and blue are always telling me jokes and making me laugh. Though the color black always tries to steal my stuff but other than that I love DeemtyTM. It’s completely changed my life for the better.”
Side effects of DeemtyTM range from mild to severe headaches. Serious allergic reactions can occur that include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat. CITIES MARK 12TH ‘NO PANTS SUBWAY RIDE’ DAY

Commuters in cities around the globe on Sunday, took part in the annual ‘No Pants on the Subway’ as passengers were undressed to impress in London, Berlin, Stockholm and many other cities.

And despite the threat of snow and bleak midwinter temperatures many hardy thrill seekers braved bracing conditions and took to the London Underground today to take part in the No Trousers Tube Ride 2013.
It was all part of the No Pants Subway Ride’s 13th annual celebration of riding the world’s underground without trousers, with commuters in London joining their counterparts from dozens of cities around the globe to venture out minus their breeches.
The No Pants event went global in 2008 with Adelaide in Australia joining eight American cities in taking part in the stunt.
Last year’s event saw tens of thousands of people daring to bare their underwear in 59 cities in 27 countries around the world.
In London alone more than 150 took part.

The hilarious craze started back in 2002 when a handful of New York pranksters decided to cause a stir on a Subway train.
One participant entered the train in just his underwear for seven consecutive stops and, if asked, were instructed to tell people that they ‘just forgot’ their trousers.
On the 8th stop, a final participant would enter the carriage selling trousers out of a duffle bag – much to the bemusement of other passengers.
The annual event steadily grew each year with more and more people choosing to take part.
But it nearly hit the buffers in 2006 when the stunt was halted by a New York policeman. Eight passengers were handcuffed in their underwear and taken into police custody.

A judge later threw out the case because it is not illegal to wear just your underwear on the Subway.
The No Pants Subway Ride is an annual event staged by Improv Everywhere every January in New York City.
The mission started as a small prank with seven guys and has grown into an international celebration of silliness, with dozens of cities around the world participating each year.
The idea behind No Pants is simple: Random passengers aboard a subway car at separate stops in the middle of winter without pants.
The participants do not behave as if they know each other, and they all wear winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves.
The only unusual thing is their lack of pants.

BONEYARD BREWERY LAUNCHES BEER FOR DOGS

It appears the beer industry has gone to the dogs after one brewery decided to launch its very own hooch for pooches.
A beer for dogs has been launched

Bottles of Dawg Grog are being snapped up in the city of Bend in Oregon, where Boneyard Brewery creates its selection of bespoke beers.
Described as a ‘healthy, nutritional, liquid treat for your best friend’, the beer can be served on its own or poured over food.
There’s no alcohol in the doggie brew, which is packed full of vegetables and spices including ginger, cinnamon and honey.
The beverage is the brainchild of Boneyard Brewery taster Daniel Keeton, who says his own dog just can’t get enough of the stuff.
‘Two things that have become part of the Bend lifestyle are beer and dogs,’ Visit Bend CEO, Doug LaPlaca told KTVZ. ‘So to create something that would take advantage of the two we thought was a brilliant idea.
‘Initially, people have to look at the label twice,’ he added. ‘Then they ask us, “Is this really for dogs?”‘
In October last year, a Scottish brewery claimed to have created the world’s strongest beer, a 65 per cent beverage dubbed Armageddon.

NEW CRAZE IN LOUISIANA CALLED ‘WHIPPING’ AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH

DeQuincy, Louisiana — A new craze is sweeping parts of Louisiana as teenagers are participating in a unique fad known as ‘whipping’. ‘Whipping’ involves a male rubbing their penis on various objects and then taking a picture of his actions to show friends or posting the photo(s) online for others to see.

Seen here is an anonymous individual ‘whipping’ on a mailbox. ‘Whipping’ is a new trend in Louisiana which involves males rubbing their penises on various objects.
23-year-old Brandon Adams from DeQuincy told reporters the different types of ‘whipping’ that is being done in his town. “The better the ‘whipping’ the more points you score with friends,” Adams said. “Pulling down your pants and ‘whipping’ on a bar stool or something is pretty funny, but ‘whipping’ on a police car is epic. The more danger involved, makes for a better picture.”
Local resident 27-year-old Sarah Winters witnessed ‘whipping’ just days ago and told reporters that she is still traumatized from the event. “So I’m at this bar by my house with my friend Amber, drinking a few beers, just having a good time. Suddenly this group of 5 or 6 guys come in with their pants down and start running around the bar rubbing their dicks on everything. Before the owner had a chance to do anything, the group had left, but not before penis residue was all over everything,” Winters said. “They had to close the bar for two days and bring in a Hazmat Crew to clean up everything. I don’t think what those guys are doing is funny at all, it’s just disgusting.”
Sergeant Paul Horner of the DeQuincy Police Department said ‘whipping’ has become a big problem in the town. “The kids get drunk, they pull down their pants and start rubbing their dicks all over everything,” Horner said. “It’s not cool or hilarious like these guys think it is, it’s illegal. A first time offense for ‘whipping’ will usually get the individual a warning. Second and third offenses carry a minimum of a week to 30 days in jail. We’re done messing around with these types of shenanigans.”
Horner ended the press conference explaining what his plans are for the future of ‘whipping’ in DeQuincy. “Pranks like these have been around for years. It used to be innocent things like planking and things of that nature, but ‘whipping’ is just going too far. We are making it priority number one in our city to put an end to it once and for all.”
If you witness ‘whipping’ of any kind please call the Whipping Hotline at (785) 273-0325. As always you can remain anonymous.

'MR TEETH' FOUND PROTECTING MARIJUANA STASH

Mr Teeth was discovered in a home in Castro Valley, California Photo: AP

An alligator-like reptile named 'Mr Teeth' has been found protecting a stash of marijuana in California, in a scene reminiscent of Miami Vice.

When Alameda County Sheriff's deputies entered the Castro Valley home on Tuesday, they not only found 34 pounds of marijuana valued at an estimated $100,000 (£61,000), but also the 5-foot-long caiman inside a Plexiglas tank guarding it in a bedroom.
Caimans are usually found in the wetland regions of Central and South America. They are considered close relatives of alligators.
"We get guard dogs all the time when we search for grow houses and people stashing away all types of dope. But alligators? You just don't see that every day," Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.
The reptile's owner, Assif Mayar, was arrested on Tuesday and later charged with one count of possessing marijuana for sale. Mayar, 32, did not enter a plea during his arraignment in Alameda County Superior Court. He is being held in jail on $20,000 bail and is due back in court on Jan. 15.
He could also face citations from the California Fish and Game Commission, including possession of an exotic animal without a permit.
