CBJ AMEBO: SEVENTY SIX (76)-YEAR-OLD GRANDMA FINISHED MARATHON RACE IN 1:45:56 BREAKING WORLD RECORD (PHOTOS)

A 76-year-old woman ran a 1:45:56 half-marathon last weekend at the Walt Disney World Half-Marathon, breaking the previous age group world record for women between the ages of 75-79.



Libby James, 76, of Fort Collins, Colorado, blew away the previous record of 1:55:19 set in 2009 by Ginette Benard.
Other records at the Disney half included a course record by the top male finisher. Mike Morgan, 32, of Rochester Hills, Michigan finished the half in 1:05:26, beating the previous course record of 1:05:35 set by Tim Young in 2011. The top female finisher, Melissa Johnson-White, 30, of Shelby Township, Michigan, did not set a course record but had a comfortable three minute lead ahead of the second place finisher, finishing at 1:14:56. Both Morgan and White run for the Hanson-Brooks team.
Adriano Bastos, 34, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, took his eighth Walt Disney World Marathon win, finishing in 2:21:16. He reclaimed his title after Fredison Costa, 35, of Piedade, Brazil, who came in second at 2:21:32, won the past two years. Renee High, 31, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, placed first for the second consecutive year, finishing at 2:48:30.
The Walt Disney World Marathon weekend also brought some well-known running celebrities to Orlando including Olympian Desiree Davila, Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Dick Beardsley, Jeff Galloway, Frank Shorter, and Runner’s World’s own Chief Running Officer, Bart Yasso.

The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend celebrated its 20th anniversary this year and had a record amount of runners with more than 67,000 runners participating in the weekend’s events, which included a 5-K, the half-marathon, and the full marathon.
The Runner’s World Challenge, the magazine’s online marathon and half-marathon training program, participated in the weekend events as well with over 250 runners in the half-marathon and full marathon; some even ran both for the Goofy Challenge.
